Parents with their children holding a sign reading “Our tax dollars are killing kids like me” during a protest in Arlington, Va., on Dec. 9, 2023.Photo: Probal Rashid/LightRocket via Getty ImagesAs 2023 ends, I’ve been asking myself: How much money am I, personally, contributing to Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories and its attack on Gaza? The Israeli assault on Gaza launched after the October 7 attacks by Hamas has so far killed more than 20,000 Palestinians in Gaza, including thousands of children and over 100 journalists. Nearly 90 percent of the territory’s residents have been displaced, and it has been called “one of this century’s most destructive wars.”So how much have I chipped in to create this hell on earth? The best answer I’ve come up with is $150.There are two ways of looking at this number. One is that this is a relatively small amount of money. Another is that the U.S. is so astonishingly rich and powerful that we as a country can mete out overwhelming b...

No festive cheer for Arsenal and Tottenham as north London rivals lose in Premier League There was no festive cheer for north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham on Thursday.A 2-0 home loss to West Ham stopped Arsenal moving back to the top of the Premier League.A 4-2 defeat at Brighton prevented Tottenham moving back into the top four.Arsenal’s setback was more surprising, given it was the team’s first loss at home in any competition in seven months. And it’s just one win in its last four league games for the Gunners, at a time when Manchester City — the defending champion — has been looking vulnerable with just one win in six before a come-from-behind victory at Everton on Wednesday. In truth, Arsenal — despite having 30 shots — never looked like getting the better of West Ham once the visitors went ahead through a goal that was less conclusive than the final score.Cameras did not show definitively whether the ball was out of play when Jarrod Bowen turned it back into the penalty area for Tomas Soucek to force home a finish in the 13th minute. Bowen’s right leg bl...

No. 2 Washington’s ‘nasty’ offensive line out prove West Coast football can out-tough Texas in CFP NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Washington offensive tackle Troy Fautanu has heard all the snide remarks about West Coast football and how those pass-heavy offenses in the Pac-12 are not tough enough to win a national championship.“We’re kind of used to slander,” Fautanu said Thursday. The Huskies’ biggest dawgs allowed only 11 sacks this season, paving the way for Michael Penix Jr. and No. 2 Washington to reach the College Football Playoff and earning the Joe Moore Award, given to the best offensive line in the country. If there are still questions about the Huskies’ line, Fautanu has a suggestion: “Turn on the tape.”In the Sugar Bowl semifinal on Monday, Fatanu and company will get a chance to prove they can out-tough No. 3 Texas and a defensive line anchored by maybe the best set of tackles in the country in All-American T’Vondre Sweat and second-team All-American Byron Murphy II.“It’s a great group of guys and we’ll face ’em Monday,” said the 362-pound Sweat, who seemed to t...
