ATLANTA — The Giants’ bats came alive, Logan Webb left with a lead, and it still wasn’t enough Saturday night. In a devastating 6-5 defeat to the MLB-best Atlanta Braves, the Giants trailed for all of four outs.Capping a 4-for-4 performance, Eddie Rosario hammered a first-pitch sinker from Tyler Rogers in the eighth inning well over the center field wall for a go-ahead two-run home run, measured at an estimated 441 feet. Answering to chants of “Eddie! Eddie! Eddie!” Rosario emerged from the first-base dugout to take a curtain call for his game-deciding hit and received more adoring chants from the sold-out crowd of 42,744 as he took the field for the top of the ninth. The home run erased a gritty effort from Logan Webb, who completed six innings while holding Atlanta’s dangerous lineup to four runs, and a rare strong night from their lineup, which produced 11 hits, tied for their most in a game since June 23.The Giants’ slide continued, losing for t...49ers-Broncos: Brock Purdy makes one-series cameo, yields to Sam Darnold

SANTA CLARA — Brock Purdy smiled as he strolled the sideline, chatted up happy teammates, and savored the 49ers’ opening scoring drive. It couldn’t have been a starker contrast to the last time he played in a game. You know that game — in Philadelphia, with the NFC Championship on the line, and Purdy helplessly withering in pain because of a torn elbow ligament from the first series of an eventual 31-7 defeat on Jan. 29.This game, it was only a preseason affair, but it reintroduced Purdy to “game speed,” and it offered the 49ers’ home crowd a welcome reminder of his rookie heroics from last season, when he went from “Mr. Irrelevant” to an unbeatable wonder. One series was enough for Purdy’s re-entry.Sam Darnold relieved Purdy after that 10-play opening drive, which ended with a 20-yard field goal from Jake Moody but, more important, saw Purdy escape unscathed after replicating his 2022 play-making ability.San Francisco 49ers ...Houston Astros star Jose Altuve reaches 2,000 career hits

It’s not always good to be the king.Spain’s monarch, Felipe VI, usually lives a life of discreet luxury in the Zarzuela Palace on the outskirts of Madrid — occasionally deviating from his routine to inaugurate events, go skiing, or attend international sporting competitions. But Spain’s fragmented political landscape is obliging the king to interrupt his schedule with growing regularity and to act as a neutral arbiter in an increasingly polarized country. On Monday, the monarch will find himself at the center of national attention as he meets with the leaders of the political groups with representation in the Spanish parliament before deciding who he will nominate to be the next prime minister. That mission may sound simple, but after last month’s inconclusive national election, none of the party leaders has secured the simple majority of votes needed to form a government, and that means the king will have to make a choice between the two leading candidates.Cons...Daniel Vogelbach’s grand slam secures Mets’ series victory over Cardinals

The hot swinging Amazin’s leaned on the long ball Saturday night in St. Louis to defeat the Cardinals 12-3.With the Mets leading 3-1, Daniel Vogelbach launched a grand slam in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Vogelbach’s slam was his 10th of the season as the rest of his teammates joined in on the home run party.DJ Stewart added a solo shot in the fourth — his fourth in his past four games — and Pete Alonso crushed a two-run shot in the seventh for good measure to cap off the Mets’ homerun party. While the Amazin’s provided plenty of run support, it wasn’t exactly necessary with Kodai Senga on the hill in dominant form. The right-hander tossed seven innings allowing one run on just two hits while striking out five. The 30-year-old lowered his season ERA to 3.19 as his sensational rookie season remains one of the few bright spots on the season.Francisco Lindor cleared the bases in the 9th on an ...Latest news
